Newspaper Diary Continues: 2012-2021, Joanne Leonard

NOTE: There are over 100 works in the series Newspaper Diary, begun in 2006 and continuing at present. Early work from the series (2006-2012) is represented on this website by the catalog, Newspaper Diary published early in 2012. You can click on this catalog to open it, page through, and enlarge the images. The list below is a selection from the work that has followed, from later in 2012 to early 2021.

As I began my series (in 2006), I thought that (next to fragile clipped news pictures) book pages represented “permanence” – but more and more both newspapers and books are being transformed and “dematerialized” by the digital revolution so my project has become, unexpectedly, a kind of archiving of the hard-copy paper-based existence of both newspapers and books. An autobiographic trace in this work (news-clipping activity being a bit like diary-keeping) continues the thread of autobiography and sometimes feminist commentary (many of the clippings reflect on lives of women) that has run through much of my work, including my 2008 book, Being in Pictures, an Intimate Photo Memoir.
